Money Magazine Lists Wentzville School District Among Top 100;
Survey Spotlights High-Quality Districts Where Housing Is Affordable
The Wentzville R-IV School District is starting off the new year under the national spotlight, thanks to an extensive survey confucted by Money magazine and reported in its January 1996 issue. In what it called a "ground-breaking" survey, Money magazine listed Wentzville among the top 100 schools in the United States where children can receive a high quality education in a community where housing is still affordable.
Of the 525 public school districts in the state of Missouri, the Wentzville R-IV School District was the only one in the state recognized in the Money magazine survey.
"A recognition such as this is a result of an entire community working together to educate its young people," said Dr. Ron Berrey, Wentzville Superintendent. "The Wentzville School District is fortunate to have an outstanding faculty and staff who work closely with parents and the community to provide a personal touch for each and every student. We're excited about this recognition and share this recognition with the community at large."
The survey identifies 100 school districts that are within commuting distance of the nation's 80 most populous metro areas. The survey was conducted by Money magazine in conjunction with SchoolMatch, a Columbus, Ohio based company that helps parents select schools for their children. To find these "best-value schools," Money asked SchoolMatch to search its database of the nation's 16,665 public school systems for those that rate high academically and are in communities offering reasonably priced housing.
According to the article in Money magazine, the school systems that made the list rank in the top 20 percent of all school systems in the nation academically, based on their students' performance on college entrance examinations and on the number of National Merit Scholarships the districts have produced over the past five years.
Money magazine found some common characteristics in the school districts recognized in the survey: widespread community support for public education, involed parents, enthusiastic teachers, innovatice but not trendy administrators, and high expectations for all students.
Berrey noted that the Wentzville School District has all of the characteristics mentioned in the article.
"We have a community that recognized our needs and has a history of supporting us in the past tax increases and bond issues," he said. "We have parents who are genuinely interested in their children's education and who take volunteer roles both in the classroom and in shaping the district's future; we have teachers who have children at the center of their instruction, and we also have outstanding students in our district."
The Wentzville R-IV School District is located in western portion of St. Charles County and serves nearly 5,000 students from the communities of Wentzville, Lake St. Louis, Foristell, O'Fallon and Dardenne Prairie, as well as surrounding rural areas. The district encompasses an 125 sq. mile area and operates four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school.
